Making Room For God
2 Kings 4:8-17 (NLT): “One day Elisha went to the town of Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to come to her home for a meal. After that, whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for something to eat. She said to her husband, ‘I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.’
One day Elisha returned to Shunem, and he went up to this upper room to rest. He said to his servant Gehazi, ‘Tell the woman from Shunem I want to speak to her.’ When she appeared, Elisha said to Gehazi, ‘Tell her, “We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us. What can we do for you? Can we put in a good word for you to the king or to the commander of the army?’”
“’No,’ she replied, ‘my family takes good care of me.’
Later Elisha asked Gehazi, “’What can we do for her?’
Gehazi replied, he doesn’t have a son, and her husband is an old man.’
“’Call her back again,’ Elisha told him. When the woman returned, Elisha said to her as she stood in the doorway, ‘Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!’
“’No, my lord!’ she cried. “’O man of God, don’t deceive me and get my hopes up like that.’
But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said.”
In our passage this morning we see a wealthy Shunamite woman who “urged” the man of God to come and feast with them as he was passing by. Urge: Earnestly or Persistently Persuaded. When the Spirit of God visits where you are – Don’t just let him pass by. Invite Him to Come to Your Home and Dine with You! After That, The Bible says that Whenever He Passed That Way, He Would Stop For Something To Eat! There was a regular visitation. A Relationship Was Built. He Moved From “Visitor” to “Guest.” Verse 9: “She said to her husband, ‘I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. Let’s build a small room for him.’”
I’m sure there are many folk that regularly sit at the table of the Holy Spirit but Have Never Made Room for Him in their Lives.
As a Matter of Fact: The Way That You Perceive The Lord Determines What You Receive From The Lord.
If you “Make Room” for the Anointing; the Anointing will “Make Room” for you.
This Woman Built and Prepared a Room In Her House For The Anointing,
She Sowed Into The Anointing.
There are four symbolic Items that this woman placed in the room she prepared for the Anointing.
A Bed, A Table, A Chair and A Lampstand:
There Was A BED: Peace and Rest, Sabbath: Resting, Not Human Doings But Human Beings.
Mita – A Sofa Bed – Symbolizes Rest. Sabbath – a day of rest set apart for the Lord —> Reflection, Inspection, Detection and Direction.
Exodus 20:8-11 (NIV): “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
4 Practical Ways To Keep the Sabbath Holy:
Set Aside 24 hr. Period – Principal vs. Law
Jews – Fri Evening to Sat Evening
Christians – Sat Evening to Sun Evening
Spend Time w/ The Lord During The 24hr. Period
Don’t Work During the 24 Period – Rest!
Do Something You Enjoy – Stimulating!
There Was A TABLE: Communion and Conversation = Prayer. Resting Is Not Praying;
Praying is Communing . Suhlan – A Prepared Table – Symbol of Communion. It’s A Prepared Table or King’s Table. She more than likely had a spread on a table. Psalm 23:5 (NASB 1995): “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.” You Can Fight or You Can Feast: It’s Up To You
There Was A CHAIR: Authority and Authorization, Yielding. It Says To God, “You Lead and I Will Follow.” Kise – Seat, Stool or Throne – Symbol of Authority.
When You Establish His Authority in Your Life = He Establishes Authority In Life
Romans 13:1 (NLT): “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.”
There are no authorities that exist except that which has been established by God. Matthew 28:18 (NASB 1995): “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Ephesians 2:6 (NLT): “For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.”
Matthew 16:15-19 (NLT): “Then he asked them, ‘But who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.’”
There Was A LAMPSTAND: Illumination and Elevation, The Word. Reading: Leaders Are Readers.
Nora (Mnora) – Lampstand. John 1:1-4 (NKJV): “ In the beginning was the word; the word was with God and the word was God. Through Him all things were made. In Him was life and that life gave light to all men.” John 1:14 (NKJV): “The word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
John 8:12 (NIV): “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” Matthew 5:14-15 (NKJV): “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.”
Psalm 119:105 (NKJV): “ Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:130 (NASB 1995): “The unfolding of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.”
